It's always a big deal when Queen Bey announces a new project.
Beyoncé is releasing a new visual album, Black Is King, on Friday 31 July through Disney Plus.
UPDATE: Beyoncé has shared a second trailer for the visual project, featuring Jay-Z, Pharrell Williams and other names including Naomi Campbell and actress Lupita Nyong'o. Check it out below!
Written, directed, and produced by Bey herself, it's a full-length project in the style of 2016's blockbuster Lemonade, but based on the music from last year's The Lion King: The Gift.
That album was inspired by the CGI remake of The Lion King (in which Beyoncé voiced Nala), and featured Childish Gambino, Kendrick Lamar, Pharrell, 070 Shake, Jay-Z, Blue Ivy Carter, as well as African artists including Wizkid, Burna Boy, Tekno, Mr. Eazi, Yemi Alade, and more.
Black Is King will feature some of those special guests and is a 'celebratory memoir for the world on the Black experience,' according to a statement from Disney and Beyoncé’s Parkwood Entertainment.
'The film is a story for the ages that informs and rebuilds the present. A reunion of cultures and shared generational beliefs. A story of how the people left most broken have an extraordinary gift and a purposeful future.”

According to Parkwood, the film's narrative is a reimagining of lessons from The Lion King for “today’s young kings and queens in search of their own crowns.'
'These timeless lessons are revealed and reflected through Black voices of today, now sitting in their own power,' the statement adds, with 'lush visual that celebrate Black resilience and culture.'
It's not clear if Black Is King will include Beyoncé's recent Juneteenth single 'Black Parade', a slice of empowering RnB with similar themes of celebrating Black excellence. (And you'll be hearing 'Black Parade' this week on triple j and Double J, where Beyoncé is also the subject of Thursday's J Files).

Earlier this month, Beyoncé reportedly inked a $100 million deal with Disney to work on three film projects, one of which is rumoured to be Black Panther 2.

Earlier this month, Beyoncé reportedly inked a $100 million deal with Disney to work on three film projects, one of which is rumoured to be Black Panther 2.
Though Black Is King - probably another of the three projects - is clearly a great marketing tool to significantly boost Disney Plus subscriptions, Beyoncé has been sharing her star power across various subscription services in recent years.
Lemonade was launched through HBO, her Coachella concert film Homecoming was part of a $60million deal with Netflix, and Everything Is Love - her 2018 collab album with Jay-Z - was a TIDAL exclusive for a few days upon release.
